Vale Richard Laidler

The Club is saddened at the passing of Richard “Richie” Laidler in Japan on Friday 10 May 2019. Richie had endured a long battle with nose and throat cancer since 2013 with a couple of periods of remission.

Richie joined his brother, Mick, at St. Bernard’s CC in 1988 after playing 24 First XI district games at Carlton CC. Richie was a member of our First XI Premiership team in 1988/89 taking 5/27 in the Grand Final after teaming with Mick in the semifinal to get us into the Grand Final by making 53no and taking 4/53.

Richie played 33 games for the Snowdogs winning the First XI bowling on 2 occasions and the Beau Redmond Club Champion once. Unfortunately due to his transfer interstate he missed out on the First XI premiership in 1990/91 but had taken 34 wickets before he left. He was also Club Coach with Mick Redmond.

Richie, like his brother, Mick played VFA football with Coburg and in later years coached the Japan Samurais International Football League team in 2008 as well as being Head Coach of the Japan Cricket Team.

He will be sadly missed by all at the Snowdogs and our sympathies go to Mick and the Laidler Family.

A Memorial Service for Richard will be held at West Preston Lakeside Football Club on Friday, 17 May 2019 at 2.00pm

Terry Davis on behalf of St. Bernard’s OC Cricket Club.
