St Bernard’s OCCC is an Essendon based cricket club that plays in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association (VSDCA). The VSDCA is the second highest level of metropolitan cricket in the state and is seen as a platform for players to move onto Premier Cricket and then State Cricket (Victoria). We are the only SubDistrict Club in the Essendon area with 5 senior sides and 10 junior sides. We also participate in the J.G Craig (Formerly Hatch) Under 15 representative cricket, which is watched by Cricket Victoria coaches for state selection.
The Junior Academy is into its 3rd season with the aim of providing personalised coaching to talented cricketers in a supportive environment. It’s important to understand that the St Bernard’s OCCC is supportive of you continuing to play juniors or seniors with your local Cricket Club whilst participating in the St Bernard’s OCCC Junior Academy, and take the view that it is a development opportunity, providing specialist coaching and turf cricket experience.
Last season, of the 20 participants, 8 were selected in the clubs JG Craig under 15 representative side. 3 players played regular 3rd XI cricket with two members debuting in the 2nd XI.
We are delighted to have Tim Grant as our Head Coach for the season. Tim played over 100 Premier First Grade games for Melbourne University as well as taking Seddon Cricket Club to a premiership as captain/coach. Tim is also the senior assistant coach and will open the batting in the First XI. James Lowrie who has moved across to SBOCCC from Balwyn Cricket Club, where he played over 200 games and is a 1st XI Premiership player and coordinated the successful Balwyn Cricket Academy, will oversee the program and will be assisted by club Life Member Duncan Hefter. The players will have opportunities to work with specialist coaches from the cricket club including former Carlton 1st XI District player (now St Bernard’s player) Aaron Smillie, club head coach Nigel Freebairn as well as St Bernard’s senior players.
The Academy will begin with 3 spring sessions held on Wednesday 28th August, September 4th and 11th. These are held at the Western Sports Centre from 5pm to 6pm. The summer program is still being finalised. The cost of the program for the full season is $150 (This includes uniform and all coaching).
We will be holding an information evening on Monday August 19th from 6pm – 7pm at the college Pavilion. You will hear from both Tim and James about the season ahead.
